Every day, 5,000 passenger trains carrying almost 1 million passengers and 230 trains with a total freight load of 80,000 tonnes of goods ride on the rails. This makes the Dutch railway network the second busiest in Europe after Switzerland.

A noisy train can cause a lot of annoyance to the areas surrounding the line. New, quiet braking technology for (freight) trains, noise dampers in the rails and ‘acoustic’ polishing of the line are now tried-and-tested IPG-Rail measures. Rail dampers are used in Breda, on the Zeeuwselijn, and in the municipality of Twello. Various freight trains, called ‘whisper trains’, ride with quiet brake blocks. This has led to a noticeable reduction in noise pollution for people living near the lines.

In about fifteen projects, IPG-Rail is developing more measures to make rail traffic in the Netherlands quieter. For example, how can you organize the activities in a rail-yard so that there are fewer train movements and therefore less noise pollution? IPG-Rail also makes a contribution at European level by disseminating knowledge about measures at the source of train traffic.
