IPG makes the Netherlandsaffordably quiter

Every day, thousands of people in the immediate vicinity of railways and highways experience noise pollution. The Noise Innovation Programme (Innovatieprogramma Geluid) develops measures to tackle traffic noise at the source, to make the Netherlands quieter.

Tackling noise at the source

Erecting noise screens is a measure that is often applied when combating noise pollution. However, noise screens are expensive and often obstruct the view. The Noise Innovation Programme (IPG) is trying out measures to tackle noise at the source. For example, quiet tyres for cars, new braking technology that makes trains quieter, but also quieter road surfaces and measures to make rails quieter when a train rides over them. The IPG is also stimulating the application of these measures.

Developing, testing, applying

As well as developing and testing new measures for vehicles, road and rail, a second major step is the speedy application of innovations. Introducing new measures should not only lead to a clear reduction in noise but also to a halving of the existing costs. The Noise Innovation Programme is a joint venture between the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM), the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management (V&W), ProRail and the Department of Public Works and Water Management.

More about the Noise Innovation Programme

The IPG started in 2002 and will run until 2007. You can read more about the Noise innovation Programme in the 2002-2005 programme plan and the updated 2006-2007 programme plan.
