2-layer ZOAB, as it is called in Dutch, consists of two layers of the well-known porous asphalt. By laying two layers on top of each other, the road surface contains even more hollow spaces, which absorb noise. More hollow spaces mean more noise absorption.

In IPG-Weg, this noise measure has been tested and found to be effective. The measure has now been approved for use, which means that 2-layer porous asphalt may be applied in the Netherlands. After 2-layer porous asphalt has been laid, noise production is reduced by roughly 6 decibels compared with non-porous asphalt. But the development of 2-layer porous asphalt must go on. IPG-Weg is investigating the possibilities of increasing the life of the product, among other things.
