Marshalling yards

In the Netherlands, there are more than 100 railway marshalling yards. These marshalling yards often lie in highly populated areas such as the centre of a big town. Many things take place in a marshalling yard, such as shunting, cleaning, maintenance, carrying out small repairs and warming up diesel trains. All of these activities can lead to noise pollution of the immediate neighbourhood.

The smart way of handling marshalling yards

IPG-Rail is carrying out a number of projects to test how you can carry out the work done in a marshalling yard more efficiently so that trains have to be driven back and forth less often. For example, by carrying out maintenance simultaneously or parking a train next to the platform after its last journey instead of driving it to the marshalling yard.
