Noise innovations on therail infrastructure

In addition to quieter passenger and freight trains and less noise in railway marshalling yards, IPG-Rail is also developing measures to make the rails on which the trains ride quieter. When a train rides over the rails, there is friction between the rails and the wheels and this causes noise.

Making rails smooth and keeping them smooth

Rails that have few irregularities produce less noise. By travelling over the rails with a special polishing wagon, a smooth top surface is created. This produces a noise reduction of 2 decibels. Because trains constantly pass over the rails, these become rougher. For this reason, a special train carries out measurements so that we know where the rails have to be polished in time.

Noise dampers on the rails

By fixing dampers to the sides of the rails, the noise of a passing train is reduced by about 3 decibels. Rail dampers have been applied in Twello, Breda and Rotterdam. Fitting rail dampers is labour-intensive and rather expensive. For this reason, IPG-Rail is testing out prefabricated rail dampers (that are already fixed to the rails in the factory) on the Zeeuwse line among others as an alternative to the ordinary rail damper.
Rail dampers come in various forms. Only one type is used in the Netherlands at the moment. New types are expected shortly.
